100% digital transformation
Remote Legal evolved into a fully tech-enabled company capable of conducting depositions entirely online.
When COVID-19 disrupted the legal industry, Remote Legal needed to rethink how depositions were conducted. Backed by new private equity investment, the company partnered with our team to design and build a digital platform that re-created the in-person experience online, enabling secure, seamless, and fully remote proceedings.
We helped transform Remote Legal into a tech-enabled company ready to scale. The new platform streamlined operations, unlocked new revenue opportunities, and set the foundation for expansion across the U.S. and long-term growth.
Remote Legal is New York’s leader in stenographic court reporting. Combining experienced court reporters with a forward-thinking approach, the company had already begun exploring remote proceedings before the pandemic accelerated the shift.
Focused on accuracy and professionalism, Remote Legal serves law firms across the U.S. and recognized early on the potential of technology to make depositions more efficient and accessible.
Before partnering with Making Sense, Remote Legal operated through a mix of traditional and partially online processes. When COVID-19 hit, the company’s business model was suddenly at risk as in-person depositions became impossible, and the industry needed new ways to operate.
With fresh private equity investment and a vision to scale,
Remote Legal needed to:
Transition from traditional operations to a fully digital model
Strengthen efficiency, security, and the overall deposition experience
Build a scalable technology foundation to support nationwide expansion
Our goal was to help Remote Legal evolve from a traditional court reporting firm into a fully tech-enabled organization. By developing a secure digital platform tailored to the legal industry, we aimed to modernize operations, streamline the deposition process, and create a scalable foundation for future growth.
After a comprehensive discovery process, we defined Remote Legal’s product vision, roadmap, and MVP priorities. Working closely with leadership and investors, we focused on balancing speed, scalability, and security to bring the concept to life quickly.
In just nine months, we transformed the initial idea into a fully functional platform that re-created the in-person deposition experience online.
Key initiatives included:
To deliver a seamless and secure deposition experience, we built a cloud-based architecture designed for high performance, scalability, and compliance with legal standards. The web app was developed in React, integrating Twilio for WebRTC videoconferencing and recording, and Azure Cognitive Services for real-time speech-to-text transcription. On the backend, we used .NET Core with a MySQL database cluster hosted on AWS Fargate, supported by a media post-processing pipeline using SQS queues, Lambda functions, and FFmpeg for transcoding. Continuous integration was managed through CodeBuild.
For Quality Assurance, we combined manual exploratory testing with automated regression tests using Selenium, and conducted load and performance testing through TestRTC and JMeter to ensure platform stability under real-world conditions.
From traditional court reporting to nationwide scale.
Remote Legal’s new platform reshaped how depositions take place, bridging the gap between technology and the traditional legal process. The solution not only ensured business continuity during a critical moment but also unlocked new ways to operate, scale, and grow.
